R. Kelly filming a video for "Birthday Song," Jan. 5

This is a discussion on R. Kelly filming a video for "Birthday Song," Jan. 5 within the R. Kelly Polls forums, part of the R. Kelly Music Chat category; Grammy winning video. I was disappointed there wasn't a porn segment....

Let's keep this in perspective, if we consider the year has just started, then only 2 years ago we had the 'Love Letter' era which lasted from at least 2010-13. Then he dropped 'Black Panties' with talk of 7 projects (including the house album) and let's not forget 'It's Your World' and 'Make The World Go Round'. 2 great songs which got zero attention or appreciation.

If we also consider the snippets of the songs he's written for Fantasia and Tyrese, we are not talking about someone who is not putting in the work which most of his fans want. I would encourage those who only want him to stay in that lane, to fully appreciate it when he does rather than take it for granted.

Now, the issue with songs like this is often timing. When you are fiending for some 'Real R. Kelly' or real music in general, and he releases a song of this nature the reaction can be 1 of disbelief/frustration/disappointment/all the above. In 2009 he dropped 'Supaman High'. At that time, the general consensus/feeling of the forum was that it was his worst song ever. Over time it grew on some people, and I think if you listen to it now, or it came on in a club I think you would find that it's nowhere near as bad (or catastrophic) as we initially expressed.

Then we take a song like 'Tear It Up' - when I heard it as a radio rip, I thought it was awful. Combined with the fact that I was hoping for some 'TP-2' type music I was feeling it even less. The truth of the matter though, is that the song is banger. His vocal delivery, the way he bounces over the instrumental, and manipulates the music in general was highly innovative. Remember, this is a man who has made 1000's of songs in his life, so to still be able to create new sounds and effects, and push the envelope at this stage in his career is nothing short of amazing (in my opinion).

Overall, I reiterate we just need to keep this in perspective. This is 1 song, which definitely wont define who he is or who he becomes. It's 1 song in a grand scheme of things. Personally, I wanted the house project but if it's 'Double Up' version 3.0 then so be it. I don't particularly like this type of music, but I have to admit Rob's attempt at it goes hard. If you take a moment to recognise the composition/construction, it is miles away from the standard of the songs of this type out there. I wont champion this song per se, because that would be a futile exercise but let's try to avoid the usual boring statements like "he's too old for this/he needs to get grown/where's the old R. Kelly". We should be wise enough ourselves to realise Rob works in cycles, plus deserves time to do his thing and have his fun.

If you can't do that, then how about picking up the 2013 'Black Panties' album and listen to some songs like 'Legs Shakin', 'Genius', 'Circles', 'All The Way', 'Physical', 'Lights On', 'Right Back' or better yet......

    'Shut Up'?

    (Sorry, I couldn't help that one y'all ).
Bro, you know I love you right? But this is bull shit... our boy is 48 years old!

He NEEDS to grow up and pay his bills; songs like this definitely won't

Also good to see a man being a man off up in a video for a change, as opposed to all of this (effeminate) 'moistness' that is being pushed. The song is about being drunk, acting the fool, and being somewhat belligerent - which despite what the masses will say, is acceptable and is practiced by many. (Anybody in doubt, please take a trip to Vegas).

I hope he shoots all the videos for this project, cuz this would have never got the green light if RCA were required to release it.

    "Happy Birthday.......b!tch!".

Would be nice to see how he'll feed off stuff like this long term. Generally accepted behavior but you don't see most posting videos of it online do you?

And you're right about RCA never greenlighting this hence why he uploaded it to "R. Kelly TV" channel and not VEVO. Rob should leave RCA, they're really not doing shit for him. It's time to leave when you not only have to film your own videos but hire people to help with promotion. Ridiculous.
I'm sure if he gave a project worth promoting they'd green light it

Care to elaborate, because I made quite a few points - or was everything I said mere 'bovine faeces'? Regarding it being long term, there was never anything long term about this song. It was just 1 moment in a thousand for Rob, in fact he probably forgot he wrote the song he moves onto other things so quickly. Oh and as for the most don't do it comment - I couldn't care less what most people do. The video was fun, it was a man being a man, and I'm down with that all day everyday.

In the current climate and trend of nonsensical agendas I would probably be labelled a 'misogynist' and this video would/probably is frowned upon. Personally I will not be supporting the movement to lower the birth rate and alter people's gender, so for those out there who are adding to their wrinkle lines - feel free to suck my d#ck!

    Sorry, my bad y'all.

Right and I'm sick of people bringing up his age. Like who gives a fuck? He's an entertainer, ugh.
