My opinion is that he is not underrated (except for few stuck up critics who always critcise anything R Kelly), it's just many people are still caught up in the past, but if you know music thats all that is important, fortunately for him he's already sold over 30 million copies in the US alone and has won many awards, so he does not have to prove a point to anyone, other than keep on making good music.

    Its a question of RISKS.

EVERY artist that actually creates music, like he does, has taken RISKS. What this means is that you are going to anger some people and please others.

    Risk #1: Sexually charged lyrics.
    Risk #2: Gospel
    Risk #3: Hip Hop
    Risk #4: "Stepping" Music
    Risk #5: Soul R&B in 2011

Despite the people he turned-off when attempting the above he made music, sold records and refined what an R&B artist can do.

I think Maxxx and most of you are right tho. With as many risks, genre hopping and creativity that R.Kelly gives us, most people won't give him his due until he passes and one can evaluate his TOTAL accomplishments.

I was absolutely astonished, disgusted & every other emotion when I saw that list. NO RESPECT whatsoever. seems everybody has made up their minds not to include R. Kelly in anything ever since the controversy and ALLEGATIONS. damn shame. I almost shattered my tv when that was on. sadly, the allegations has made an impact on sells because ppl still bring it up. he should be at the 40 million sold plateau by now. w/o question underrated. what other artist from '91 is still around & relevant? what other artist has written & produced majority of their work? how many other artist owns their masters? how many artist have resurrected other living Legends, written, produced #1 albums or songs? (MJ, Isley Bro, Charlie Wilson, Britney Spears etc) what other artist has written & produced a soundtrack? Love Letter on any chart right now is proof he's underrated. Guess nowadays its about what sells and clearly BULLSHIT is whats hot. and that ish stinks. they betta be glad im not famous cause only real ppl would appreciate me. id be goin ham on everybody. ok back to the regularly scheduled program...

Glad to see this thread is still active

It really saddens me how disturbingly underrated R. Kelly is and how quick people are to up those who aren't so deserving. Sadly, people won't wake up to his talent and the genius till the day he passes. A large number of people will become fans (aka bandwagon fans) and others will be acknowledge his contributions to music. "Oh, That R. Kelly was so talented. He wrote for so many artists" or "R. Kelly is a legend". Grrr. It angers me just thinking about it.

BTW, Am I the only that feels that us R. Kelly fans have to praise or listen to him in private? It seems like when I want to talk about him to others. People always take it jokingly or bring up other shit that has nothing to do with his artistry. I hate it.

^No, you are certainly not the only 1 H.O.B. and what really annoys me is how even folk with the wackest of songs can be on non-stop rotation on radio/Tv, but when an R. Kelly song is released it will be played a little and then removed, often followed by comments like:

"We hear too much R. Kelly..." or words to that effect.

Its like everybody else can have the songs they like when and wherever they please, but if we arent playing R. Kelly from our own iPods/stereos then we never get to hear him. Now that really sucks in my opinion.

I think since the release of "Love Letter" and the various live performances, ppl are now starting to appreciate him more now than ever...
