When he puts out songs like Ignition Remix and I'm a Flirt, both of which were extremely popular, he is definitely held to pop standards. but people need to realize that those songs are departures from what he usually puts out, which is R&B music.

I agree with yall "R" will always be R&B, but I think he has the skills to do pop, gospel, rock, hiphop, and country.......plus do it better then most artist in each catogory. I do believe most people will always see him as R&B....Soul and when he dipps in other catogories it's like thats cool for a minute, but bring back that 12 play groove.

R. Kelly has always been hold to the standards of R&B because that's really his cup of tea. I hated when people say that he hold Hip-Hop/Rap standards. He is NOT a rap artist, although he does freestyle on some of his music. He is NOT holding up to the Pop standards at all, either. Thsi man can create by using almost EVERY genre of music, but R&B will always be his reputoire.
R. Kelly is the KING of all Kings of R&B. PERIOD!!!!

He is first and foremost R&B but He has Pop acesibliy and Hip-Hop vibe and Gospel there as well. He is R&B/Pop and lets not forget he is one of the Best Selling Artists ever in Popular Music. though R.Kelly is influenced by Frankie Beverly and Maze his cross over record is tons more than them in terms of sales,impact.etc... and that ain't a Put down because the R.Kelly has stayed R&B grounded because most Pop folks know his hits but he ain't never crossed over like that. his story is a interesting one in that despite having Number Pop Albums, songs and for others he has stayed R&B based. but he is a Hybrid of all kinds of things which is the very definition of R&B Music which is a Gumbo of Pop, Gospel, Blues,etc... to get to the Point of the Question yeah He is seen as a Black Artist first and foremost because R&B is a Code word. but he has fans and has done damage on the Pop side of the fence, because don't forget he had the most Top 40 Hits by a Male Artist in the 90's.

Here is a good example of how much harder the public and even R.Kelly Fans are on R.Kelly:

Mariah Carey who is the female equivalent of R.Kelly as the highest selling Female of 1990s who is still relevant to this day.

Mariah Carey in 1997 w/ the release of "Butterfly" went 6x Platinum.
(I picked 1997-1998 because this is when R.Kelly's "R" came out which sold 8x Platinum)
Mariah Carey in 2008 w/ the release of "E=MC2" just got over Platinum recently and its been out since April.

Mariah is pimped out harder than a Hollywood Blvd hooker by Def Jam with enough marketing $$$$$ to account for as much money as Jive has spent on R.Kelly in his past TWO releases.

But some critics and even some fans still call it a "fall off" by R.Kelly.

Food for thought.

LOL I'm a make this short cause I just found myself righting a essay as a response to your last post AZ. I think R. Kelly is possibly held to Pop standards cause you really can't place him in a category look at the music he produces for himself and others.

Kelly to a boy band lead singer unless they have lost their mind.
I couldn't have said it better without certain members talking it the wrong way.

If I were bold enough to say that Justin Timberlake is not even on the same level as R Kelly so there would be no comparison. It's because of a cat like Kells that Justin can even have a career... Some would say that I was getting off topic or I have the wrong attitude.
