Do you feel most people hold R.Kelly to R&B Artist standards or Pop Artist standards?

You see it on the net a lot. On message boards, article comments, etc. People comparing R.Kelly's numbers/popularity to Justin Timberlake (for example).

R.Kelly, IMO, is an R&B Artist who is fortunate enough to connect from time to time with Pop Music. I know quite a few R&B Artists who would give five fingers and ten on Sunday's to have 1/2 of the impact that R&B Artist R.Kelly has had.

    What do you think?

Kells is strictly held by R & B standards...don't think he's that relavant on the pop charts...maybe a song here and there but nothing to write home about...his grassroots and accountability is with R & B

Hell naw he ain't held to no pop standards!!! R. Kelly is R&B all the way, king of the bedroom. Yeah he likes to crossover into other genres, which is great, but at the end of the day, the man is king of R&B. Nobody would SERIOUSLY compare R. Kelly to a boy band lead singer unless they have lost their mind.

You know that I agree w/ all of you.

But what does the rest of the world hold him to?

If they hold him to R&B STANDARDS...then why is Jim Derogatis bitching about him selling 944,000 records? Any R&B Artist would be doing cart wheels. And it isnt just Jim, other critics always talk about his "sales".

Do you think there is such focus for Joe, Raheem, etc etc to sell a million?

I personally think that when it comes to R.Kelly the public expects him to sell a million or else he isnt doing his job.

And a million type numbers IS NOT in the R&B genre. Just look at R&B artist sales figures.

Jim says that because, honestly, he is fatass and any negativity he can bring, he will bring it. He claims to be a music critic, but doesn't know that 944,000 records from an R&B artist with a HIP-HOP album is quite an accomplishment. It was a risk but it turned out pretty well. Jim is a bitch and I dont take anything he says seriously. The people sure as HELL dont expect Raheem to sell a milli. Even Raheem knows that's a stretch. But he works hard and he's got a loyal fanbase () and he's getting new fans everyday. So maybe, several albums down the road, if he keeps working at it he'll come close. People might expect KELLZ to sell a milli not because he's held to a "pop" standard, but because he's R. Kelly, one of the greatest to ever do it. You combine his fanbase with an AWESOME album that people from all walks of life buy and you've got a milli. Kellz done it before and he'll do it again. But he's still R&B.

    Good Post.

Oh yea, my post isnt made to debate if he is R&B or Pop. Of course he is R&B.

But sometimes reading stuff on the net by professional people and bloggers I think to myself how messed up it is to expect R&B Artist R.Kelly to go Platinum or higher when the genre is pushing between 200K-400K per artist???

Its just always an uphill battle for Kellz I guess.....

And RD is the truth. He made me a convert recently. Dude is hot R&B and TRUE R&B

Although I still say R & B and I believe others in the industry feel the same way, I do believe R Kelly, because of who he is and what he's represented to music over the last 15 years is expected to bring those numbers each time, regardless of what other R & B singers are doing. You can't discuss R & B without mentioning R Kelly and R Kelly is such a dynamic person because he writes, arranges and produces much of his own music, which is very rare and on top of that he's written music and hooks for about everyone who is relavant in music today...People even expect more from his concerts....he's always judged really hard at his shows and people expect perfection and expect him to deliver because of his track record.

So is he held by pop standards..NO...but is he held by different standards for his sales and performances at concerts, yes.

I think that people don't really know where to place him. He doesn't really stick to one.

Here is a good example just from two hours ago on what I posted above:

    Aaliyah Dana Haughton

(January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001), better known as Aaliyah was an American singer, dancer, actress, model, teen idol, and also one of the first internationally known teen icons. Introduced to audiences by R&B/pop singer R. Kelly, Aaliyah became famous during the mid-1990s with several hit records from the songwriting/production team of Missy Elliott and Timbalan[/font]
