R Kelly a big hit at fashion awards

    Gabisile NdebelePublished:Jun 22, 2009
STAR-STUDDED FASHION: US R&B star R Kelly was presented with the Friend of Africa award on Saturday night Picture: THYS DULLAART

THE who’s who of Johannesburg’s A-listers and celebrities graced the long awaited, first-ever Arise Africa Fashion Week awards on Saturday night at the Sandton Convention Centre, the guests including American R&B star R Kelly.

R.Kelly gearing up for SA tour

The awards, the finale of fashion showcases from all over Africa, which have been running since June12, were attended by high- profile guests such as mining mogul Patrice Motsepe and his wife Precious Moloi-Motsepe, who is chairwoman of African Fashion International, which hosted the event.
Also there were businesswoman and magazine editor Khanyi Dhlomo, former first lady of France Cecilia Attias, and supermodel Alek Wek, who co-hosted the event with Top Billing’s Michael Mol. More than 1 000 people attended the awards.
Walking away with the top prize, the designer of the year award, were South African David Tlale and Nigerian Tiffany Amber, who will both win a place on the catwalks at the New York Fashion Week in September .
“We may not have won the football tonight, but we made headway in our mission to take African fashion to the world,” said Moloi- Motsepe .
R Kelly was undoubtedly the highlight of the night and was presented with the Friend of Africa award after his performance of hit songs such as Ignition, Wind for M e, Down Low and Happy P eople.
The singer, who arrived in South Africa on Thursday, had been forced to apologise earlier for ‘ ‘attempting to censor journalists” by making them sign a contract that could have led to their being sued if they published anything not approved by his managers.
His managers said they had wanted to prevent the star from being ‘‘misquoted”.

Other winners were Heni, m ost p romising d esigner; Klūk CGDT, Red Carpet F ashion award; and Suzaan Heyns and AngloGold Ashanti, for their c reative fashion jewellery range .

    thumbsup Another positive review

R Kelly leaves crowd in trance

AFTER his sterling show and captivating repertoire, South Africans must have forgiven and forgotten about R Kelly’s delayed trip.

On Friday at a press conference in Johannesburg he confessed to being clueless about his local fans’ favourite songs.

But when he performed at the Sandton Convention Centre he won the audience over with his spellbinding repertoire.

As soon as he got on stage he had the audience on its feet. Everyone was dancing to classics such as Step in the Name of Love, When a Woman is Fed Up and I Believe I Can Fly among others.

To say the crowd was ecstatic would be an understatement.

The American singer, who is passionate about his music career and the children he never stops talking about, proved a brilliant performer, a fan lover who is not stuck up about his success, and an African brother of note.

For more of his magic, make a date with him at the Superbowl in Sun City and the Grand West Casino in Cape Town.

Yeah what an honor With the award like that, I think he gets much love not only in South Africa, but many other countries in Africa. I mean, it's very likely South Africa is just one of the African countries that show Kellz that kind of love.

Thanx guys for the articles and pics. The shirt looks good on him.
