OLD NEWS:Sun-Times not telling all about Kelly critic

    FEATURED LETTER
We are the attorneys who represent R. Kelly in his criminal case in Cook County. On Oct. 1 the Sun-Times ran a [Showcase] review of the R. Kelly/Jay-Z concert at the Allstate Arena, "R. Kelly flouting his foes." To be more precise, Jim DeRogatis, Sun-Times rock critic, ran his interpretation of the message R. Kelly intended to deliver at his show. The article was incorrect -- both on its face and in its failure to disclose that DeRogatis has been named by prosecutors in a court filing as a witness against Kelly in his criminal case.
DeRogatis makes a number of assertions about the Sept. 29 Chicago R. Kelly concert that are flat-out wrong. DeRogatis states that Kelly and two dancers "re-emerge in a barred jail cell and feign wild intercourse." DeRogatis claims that the opening video depicts Jay-Z and Kelly's tour buses speeding toward Chicago but that Kelly's bus is followed by "an army of Chicago police cars," and that Kelly delivers an unidentified "sexy jam" against the backdrop of "flowing yellow water or rain." DeRogatis reminds readers of the alleged urination scene in the video that is involved in Kelly's criminal case. DeRogatis is of course familiar with the video, since he allegedly received the video anonymously.
Apparently, DeRogatis is so focused on Kelly's criminal case that he sees it everywhere -- even in places it is not. The cage dancing scene DeRogatis describes actually took place not during an instrumental for "Snake" but during Kelly's performance of an unreleased song with a jungle motif. That song featured animal noises to an accompaniment of dancers portraying caged wild animals. The dancers were not clad in orange jumpsuits. They wore heavy red silk robes. They danced not in a jail cell but in a cage (one that, incidentally, has been owned and used by Kelly and his tour group for more than six years). The unreleased song with a jungle motif was no more about jail than it was about the presidential election. DeRogatis is similarly misguided in his description of the opening tour bus scene. The scene depicts anonymous buses, later identifiable as Kelly's and Jay-Z's entourages, speeding to the concert venue. The buses then crash onto the concert stage over a blare of sirens with police and mock television reporters following the crash. The scene is not a police chase of Kelly. Finally, "flowing yellow water or rain" during a "sexy jam" is nothing of the sort. The song was "Honey Love," and shown on the video screens were large balls of a golden viscous substance that floated slowly up and down, designed to depict -- you guessed it -- honey.

A copy of the tape of Kelly's Sept. 29 concert has been sent to prosecutors who requested it after the Oct. 1 article was published. The tape itself, better than written explanation ever could, exposes the utter fallacies in the DeRogatis article. Unfortunately, his errors were relied upon by other Sun-Times reporters. Among them was Mary Mitchell, who relied on the reviews of that concert to reach the negative opinion set forth in her Oct. 3 column. The same errors found their way into an Oct. 4 editorial regarding the Kelly concert. The errors are disappointing and unnecessary.
A story is only as good as its source. The problem here is that the source of the most negative press regarding Kelly's Sept. 28 concert was none other than Jim DeRogatis -- the same Jim DeRogatis who has been slated by prosecutors to testify against Kelly in their case; the same Jim DeRogatis who was the alleged recipient of the anonymously sent videotape that is the basis of the prosecution's case against Kelly.
A concert, like an art exhibit, a poem or a novel, is an exercise in artistic expression. Kelly makes no apology for the exercise of his First Amendment rights to expression. The references Kelly made to his criminal case during the concert (the criticism of those who Kelly feels have betrayed him and an e-mail message looking for a companion "at least 19" among others) were precisely that: artistic expressions made in the course of an artistic performance. None of these references were intended to offend or to make light of the criminal case pending against Kelly. If anything, the fact that Kelly has incorporated these expressions into his live concert performances and song lyrics demonstrates the depth with which the case has affected him.
Just as Kelly asserts his right to express himself, he does not argue with DeRogatis' right to express himself as he sees fit. Nor does Kelly take issue with DeRogatis' right to provide his opinions and interpretations. But given the intimate familiarity that DeRogatis has acquired in Kelly's criminal case and his appearance on the prosecution's filed witness list, the Sun-Times should make these facts clear to its readers and to other reporters so they might make their own informed determination as to whether they can rely on DeRogatis' information or whether the lens through which DeRogatis views Kelly has been so tainted by bias that it obstructs DeRogatis' view of Kelly's concert, his music and his art.

Psychopaths have a Hidden Content and grossly inflated view of their own Hidden Content and importance, a truly astounding egocentricity and sense of entitlement, and see themselves as the center of the universe, justified in living according to their own rules.

Psychopaths show a stunning lack of concern for the effects their actions have on others, no matter how devastating these might be. They may appear completely forthright about the matter, calmly stating that they have no sense of guilt, are not sorry for the ensuing pain, and that there is no reason now to be concerned.

Many of the characteristics displayed by psychopaths are closely associated with a profound lack of empathy and inability to construct a mental and emotional "facsimile" of another person.

Psychopaths seem to suffer a kind of emotional poverty that limits the range and depth of their feelings. At times they appear to be cold and unemotional while nevertheless being prone to dramatic, shallow, and short-lived displays of feeling.
Obligations and commitments mean nothing to psychopaths.

But here is the crux: Psychopaths don't feel they have psychological or emotional problems, and they see no reason to change their behavior to conform with societal standards they do not agree with.

This Jim guy probably thought back in '01 he was gonna bring down Rob, he underestimated the popularity, the talent, the backing and the name R. Kelly. Now, through sad acts of desperation he is now left to just clutch at straws, I wonder what his reaction was when Ignition went No.1 or Chocolate Factory & TP-3 went muti-platinum?, he's a sad man.

Jim is nothing but a hater, plain and simple. It's really sad when you have to extremely fabricate details just to make someone look bad.
