I honestly think R. is far more complex than MJ and Prince. I know I may get attacked for this comment but I sincerely never though MJ's music is complex and I've listened to each album. The same goes for Prince. MJ was more 'complex' on a personal level. People always misunderstand his actions and questionable face alterations. Whereas R. Kelly is like a math equation that you'll never understand. Sometimes I feel like we (members on this forum) are the only ones that have an understanding of R. Kelly's complexities both musically and personally. We may not KNOW him (Tbh, I don't think R. Kelly even knows R. Kelly) but we have an understanding. We don't just write him off as some crass R&B singer with no sense and that's why I enjoy this forum. I hate how people are so quick to judge before giving an artist a chance. Now I must admit before becoming a big fan I never really thought R. Kelly is complex or eccentric. I just viewed him as a very talented R&B artist but once I started listening to his music and reading his interviews I was in awe. He's a man that has so many layers and it's interesting. People will never understand how complex R. Kelly is until they listen to his music and really give him a chance. Instead we have airheads dubbing the likes of Lady Gaga and Kanye West as complex and eccentric.

it's like apples and oranges. MJ, Prince and Kells are all legends. Just different. My personal opinion as a fan, is 1) R Kelly, 2) MJ, 3) Prince.
Kells music has the power to speak to me on a personal level, his music has the power to relate.
MJ, I grew up on...that four album run OFF THE WALL, THRILLER, BAD & DANGEROUS...damn...
Prince, I love all his stuff pre 90s, from there to me he was very hit and miss, mostly miss, he is a talented ass musician who IMO isnt interested in making songs for other or for the radio, he makes songs for himself. His shows are always the shit though (tryna get some tickets for his LA dates later this month!).
Also I believe Kells and MJ have more quality control...meaning they dont just release every little thing they do in the studio to fill an album with.

I think R.Kelly surpassed Prince with Love Letter in my opinion and I love Prince 90's work especially Come and Gold Experience there Classics in my mind. But like R.Kelly said he hasn't even reached his peak yet R.kelly is just greater because he is soooo outhere and MJ and Prince are outhere too.

    my dime on this

Prince as a Musician pretty much got most acts beat, problem is words and Music.

the Man is One of the Greatest Musical Talents Ever, however he IMO after the 80's he just became Hit and Miss.

Prince is One of those cats that you had to have kept up with his thing to truly appreciate it because when his juice ran out it went wayside.

still worth seeing Live and he was Badd back in the day.

He is set to do the 21 nights in LA and In all honesty i can't name hardly anyone else Living that can still bring the hype on stage for that kind of run.

but his studio stuff is a different matter and I understand his stance against record companys, racially and so on and so forth, Problem I got with dude is that he played both sides of the fence.

R.kelly is more Important IMO to R&B than Prince, However Prince is always gonna be seen as the More Important Icon and that has alot to do with His Cross over appeal and the timing in which he came around during.

i always say and I will say this only Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder stand in R.kelly's way IMO.

Prince is a top ten cat, though had he trimmed off some of the un necessary filer he would be higher.

FYI Prince and Kellz do have things in common here they go

The TIme style and image fast forward to the Isley Brothers and Mr.Biggs

Vanity and Applonia fast forward to Aaliyah and the appeal

both are self contained cats write, Produce, arrange, mix and have creative control over said projects

both from the Midwest and have that Swag

both display Versatility in there sounds and overall stylings

both had there own Logo Labels Prince with Pasiley Park and Kellz with ROckland

both work out of there Home city and there own Studio.

for Me R.Kelly has moved me more than Prince. just because you can play alot of instruemnts and in truth Prince plays the 4 basic instruments which are Guitar, bass, Piano and Drums, but the record company Warner Brothers back in the day manipulated the many configurations of

percussion instruments to make it seem like Prince played 20 plus instruments.

now the Minapolis Sound with the Use of the Linn Drum Program Machine and the Keyboards used as Horns became the trademark sound.

the synths were used as Horns as to tradionial Horns.

Prince is very influential and i hear his thing on alot of cats out today, but they are grooving to what he did in his Hey days of the 80's.

i would like to hear them do a track or something together because after what Kellz has done for the Isley Brothers, Michael Jackson, Charlie Wilson, I know he could bring Prince back.

not to Mention when I listen to Maxwell singing "Fortunate" you know you can Hear Prince doing that track, think about it.

Boss Man you nailed it Proper!!!!!!!!!! Prince putting any and every thing out has cost him i feel that as well. being prolific and not editing your thing shows you have no quality control with it. Co Sign.

sad thing is that nobody can seem to bring back D'angelo. demons have gotten Bro Man for the most part.

prince doing some steppers based cuts would be cool IMO. they both have made some trip out slow jams with the Lyrics. if they did a Metaphor concept Project it could be a trip.

Eventhough we know Prince is gonna be seen as the bigger icon in america's eyes, do u think kellz could ever be bigger than Prince?

in Black America I can say yes, Because I think R.Kelly is a conerstone for R&B, but in the Pop wide world?? NAW!

Prince won all kinds of awards and the thing that i always point out about how Influential Michael Jackson truly was is that Prince is aGreat example of that.

MJ Paved that door for Prince and Prince wanted cross over and he got it and he got in a Big Big Big way.

MJ set the modern dsy template for R&B and Pop Hybrid and Prince was in on that same goal and drive.

cross over by all means. now back in the late 70's and early 80's you had Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Rick James and Prince going for the same overall goal.

    stakes were high.

Prince sells CD's in Newspapers and comes across bitter and out of touch and he ain't had a Hit Song since "the Most Beautiful Girl in the World" back in 1994 and a quick FYI Prince was madd that R.Kelly's "Bump and Grind" kept him out of Number 1 and he said so in Rolling Stone magazine offering up to let R.kelly know how he felt about being at Number 2 tongue and cheek there.

yeah it's been 17 years since Prince last had a top ten Hit and yet let him tour any major city right now and I bet cash money he can perform at least 5 nights there and do much business and that Man has reputation like that.

to answer that question if R.Kelly was to leave the majors and just tour and put out Music as he wanted to and avoid the Hype Machine it would be interesting, difference between R.Kelly and Prince is that R.Kelly still has hits and he still has modern day reach.

Prince's problem is that He never updated his sound, but the Cat is a Beast Live and his reputation and his impact from back in the day carrys weight for days.

Prince was the Outlaw of his time, yet commerical.

IMO R.kelly is more important than Prince because Prince only had one dominant Era, R.Kelly has been doing this thing for 2 straight decades. I mean numbers ain't lying are they?

but Prince hit during an era where radio was segeragated and MJ and Lionel aside there was a time it was hard for a Black voice to get heard on Pop radio and Prince was very important.

    it wasn't that long ago.

R&B world though no question R.kelly towers above dude
