Default what are thoughts on people Covering R songs?

what do you think of when other Artists Cover a R Song? are there any that you dig or do you think nobody can cover his stuff? I mention this because now Weird Al has a take on "Trapped in the Closet" called "Trapped in the Drive thru" which will be getting some buzz&R.kelly has a Great sense of humor since he green lighted it for Al to Cover. but how do you feel about R Cover Songs?? usually the best ones that i have heard were either takes on "I believe I Can Fly" or the smooth Jazz based ones. whatcha think??

i think the sampling/covering/using of R's material is all but a hearbeat away.

R-and-B/HipHop acts 10-20 years down the road will sample R until they cant sample him anymore. Kells has the only music deep enough to be able to musically enhance/change and manipulate. you can only stretch a storch riff so much (for example).

I don't pay much mind to satire's. I like Weird Al and usually the songs he cover, he make them hilarious and cute. So I wouldn't care. As long as nobody does a satire that makes fun of R.

I'm iffy on regular R&B artist re-doing a Kells' classic. I don't want to hear anybody else singing his songs. I think it is an honor that they feel the song is worthy to remake, however, they can't do it justice like he do. I didn't like Yalonda's version of I Believe I Can Fly.

While I'm not a jazz music fan, I don't mind the jazz because they aren't trying to sing the whole song. It's just music and usually a chorus or something. I can deal with that.

I don't want to hear anybody sing his songs unless it's a tribute to him. lol.

    *good topic*

As long as they don't mock the artist named R.Kelly through coverings, it's cool all the way with me. I like Yolanda's version. Have any of y'all heard Etta James' version? As for sampling, it's also cool with me. You sample somebody's music not just because you wanna get something off the music. Of course, there might be a thought that, 'Oh, this song sounds great. If I use this song, I could appeal to the listeners.' We just don't know how much of the kind of thought there was, tho. And I believe sampling is also done on the basis of respect for the artist many times, if not all the time. My favorite sampled ones are K-I-S-S-I-N-G by Nas and Sermon by Eric Sermon. I'm curious who is gonna sample and which songs are gonna be sampled in the future.

i like the jazz covers, it brings R. s music alive in another way, and i can play 'him' all the time..i think its a tribute to cover someones song, but youve got to do it justice....off topic, i would love to hear R. sing some of the great songs of the past....

I've found a short clip of Craig David singing "You Are Not Alone" live acapella, and I thought it would be appropiate to put it in this thread, even though the song is known out there as a Michael Jackson song. Craig has a very warm voice and he's always been a fan of Rob.

In the video he's accompanied by a chinese man doing beatbox. Enjoy!

There's one cover I have that's so damn good, I don't even see it as a cover, it's a masterpiece of its own. It's Kenny G's and Yolanda Adams version of I Believe I Can Fly. To be honest, in the past one or two years, I've actually listened to this version more than to the original (which is a masterpiece without a single doubt, but I've hear it so many times, now it's time to listen to this new version, you know ;)).

Her live version sounds good. Her interpretation was strictly for her own style as a gospel singer, IMO. The original can't be topped, tho. There are so many renditon by professionals and non-professionals, but I can't think of any version that could give me chills just like the original did.
