^Possibly the release of 'Essential' helped bring some attention to it?

Default "Black Panties" - *** out of 4

First off, it's nice to be back here. It's been years too long. Also, apologies in advance for the slightly stilted nature of my writing right now; I write this way when I'm nervous, and it's been a minute since I've been here so cut me some slack.

But allow me to discuss Kells' latest release. I'd give Black Panties three stars out of four. I'm trying to be as honest as possible here, and as unbiased as I can be as a seven and a half year devoted R. Kelly fan.

    THE POSITIVES:
~There are many good songs on here, some of them classic R. Kelly ("Cookie," "Genius," among others).

~Listen to "Legs Shakin,'" just one of many examples on the album where Kells uses various inflections and tonalities at as hyper a pace as the R&B genre can allow. My point is that Kells' voice is in top shape. (For those who don't think so, shut up.)

~"Throw This Money On You," the best song on the album. If rhythm and blues was a tangible thing, this song would have been born in a vat full of it. One of the best songs R. Kelly has ever made. It's not spiritual, it doesn't have any direct gospel influences, and the lyrics aren't particularly special (except the absolutely BRILLIANT "Make love with your eyes, don't say a word/ Talk with your body baby, make yourself heard.") And yet the song is a work of genius. It is sexy, alluring, and seductive. Now, technically, it's a "club track," given the song's subject matter. Now, some of you may be thinking "it's not 'Burn It Up' or 'I'm a Flirt (Remix),'" and you'd be correct. Rather, "Throw This Money On You" is more in the vein of what Rob was talking about at the beginning of "Sex Planet": "I don't know man, maybe, maybe I may have missed something. You know what I'm sayin, maybe ya'll know something I don't know, but I like slow dancing in the club--fuck the bullshit. I like gettin close to a fine ass chick, you feel me?" "Throw This Money On You" may be about the club, but it subverts our expectations by being.... well, by being one of the smoothest R&B songs R. Kelly has ever made. The production by T-Town Productions and Rob himself is spectacular. When the album first came out last year, I listened to this song three times in a row before proceeding onto the next track. Yes, I love it that much.

~Kells continues to show his relevance by attracting top acts like Jeezy, Kelly Rowland, and Ludacris. Not only are they quality performers, but Kells employs them to the best of their abilities. The wildly clever 2 Chainz (he's not as dumb as you think, people--he's got an amusing rap delivery, has a sense of humor about himself, and is never boring) provides "My Story" with an excellent, off-the-wall verse that matches Rob's lyricism in that song excellently.

~Production, production, production. I was originally doubtful that after two classic old-school R&B albums, Rob wouldn't be able to properly use his own talents as well as any and all co-producers he was going to work with in order to create a more maturely-sexy vibe. Thankfully, my fears proved to be unfounded. Even the few songs I don't like are still produced pretty much perfectly; they all properly reflect the emotion and content inherent in the lyrics.

~"Spend That." Hell yeah!!! This song is a crossover for Kells--I can (and do) play it for and around my friends and the typical R. Kelly jokes fall silent, especially when that ballin chorus comes in. The song is certainly not an example of how to responsibly take care of one's finances (
"Throw that money, spend that dough, throw that money, spend that dough."), but it is fun as hell to listen to.
*Fun fact--Kells has now collaborated with both Céline Dion and DJ Mustard.

    THE NEGATIVES:
~"You Deserve Better." No. Just no. A rip-off of "A Woman's Threat" and, most recently, "When a Man Lies." Rob, you can do better.

~"Right Back." Umm, can you say "I Wish (Remix)"??

~Having Migos featured on "Show Ya Pussy." No. No. No. Stop with the ad-libs. You might as well go back to chanting "Hannah Montana" like a mental patient.

    THE IN-BETWEENS:
~"Prelude" / "Marry the Pussy." I. LOVE. THIS. SONG (the prelude is enjoyable, too). So why "in-between" positive and negative? Well, it's too jokey. It ruins the mood. The prelude is three fucking minutes long and destroys the album's momentum. Then, when the actual song comes on, well, Rob talks about.... oh, hell, you already know what I mean. It's just too ridiculous. Every performer has to evolve, but Kells said that people wanted another "12 Play," and that's partially why he made this new album. "Marry the Pussy" is hilarious, and I love it, and he says "pussy" like seventy times or something. But would you seduce a girl while playing this in the background? Maybe if you're trying to have a laugh (or twenty), but serious lovemaking "Marry the Pussy" does not inspire.

~The auto-tuned, yet tone-deaf, hookman Future. I just can't decide if I like him or not. A part of me is like "T-Pain called. He wants his everything back." (except Pain knows how to use auto-tune correctly.) But I also love Future's new song "Move That Dope." And his hook on "Bugatti" (as well as a fair amount of other modern rap songs) was epic.

    Good review and welcome back.

I'm still very mixed on the album as a whole. Aside from a few songs (Throw this Money on You, Genius, You Deserve Better) it really didn't stay in rotation for me, which is a first since I've been an R. Kelly fan. Although Cookie did grow on me after the video release. Anyway, your review has made me throw the album on, so all's good Hidden Content

Black Panties is a fairly good album. Us fans are so used to Kells' genius that it can sometime seem like what he's doing isn't always up to par (for him).

The singles are good and everything--"My Story" and "Cookie" in particular--but, like I mentioned earlier, my favorite tracks come down to "Throw This Money On You," "Spend That," and "Every Position." Those are the ones that get the most play on my iPhone when I put on some R. Kelly, which is about 70% of the time.

I enjoy how Rob did a bit of experimenting with different producers; it allows for a slightly tweaked and different sound that we're used to, while still maintaining that signature R. Kelly vibe (as it were).

Finally, I know I mentioned it in my previous post on this thread, but I just love how Kells is the only artist to have worked with both Céline Dion and DJ Mustard. Now that's what I'd call mixing it up. :D

i don't think this album was meant to be a big seller and its a niche type of record to me. i just feel he is putting out a record to turn in as to a album that really had a true theme. to me i say get that country album out because i can't see nothing hitting. to me he just ain't got that "IT" cut to carry this album. not bad, however not seeing no 12 play or tp2. he made an album to vent and throw out their, however he just didn't have that type of cut. its hit and to miss and its not the album that i can listen to all the way through, though i like some of the production and his vocals. but lets say he could drop another album and i don't think i would return to BP anytime too soon per se. like a few tracks.

Assuming it kept up the average of 2000-3000 sales a week, then it's probably somewhere from 435-445k. Just a guess though, I'm sure someone can find the official numbers
