Default Has R. Kelly come full circle?

Something that has been on my mind was...."has r. kelly come full circle?"

You may ask yourself what I mean by that and i'm about to explain. R. Kelly started out with the new jack swing and pop type sound when he came out with the public announcement and even into "12 play". However when he broke out with "R. Kelly" and "R" he suddenly started fashioning his own sound. That later went into the soulfull projects of CF/LL/HP/USM of him making his own trademark sound. Skip ahead to "Double up" and "untitled" he has suddenly gone back to trying to get the him wanting to get back on the radio vs the radio wanting him.

The sounds of "double up" and "untitled" hearken to me an R. Kelly who rather than make his own waves is simply surfing on waves created by others. We got guest hook singers of the week, auto-tune, and co-writers/producers....and you know the rest of the deal...

Has R. Kelly gone from being in the mold, to breaking the mold, to back in the mold?

    What do you think?

I dont think that he has gone away from his sound. I think that Rkelly is trying something different in his music.

good question and the answer is yes and no

he went full circle because IMO he is the most Important R&B artist over the past 20 years and he has established himself as a Artist songwriter and Producer and being able to do his thing.

no because he has always done what was happening at the time difference is when he started and was making noise the competitiion was far deeper and better and now the weak to wack of what we have today shows you where things are.

he needs to be motivated and driven and to me the last time had that swagger and attitude was chocolate factory, loveland, happy people/u saved me era.

when it seemed that everything was working against him we got some of his best stuff ever and since then IMO it's been Hit and Miss. the tours have been cool.

sooner rather than later you gotta aceept you and stop chasing what is out because dumping down your skills for some microwave fast food act of the moment ain't cool and is forgotten.

my main thing with him now is that he is trying to appeal to this crowd and that crowd even when he was doing new jack swing and what was happening he still was challenging himself with a pen and his voice.

As i was trying to explain to my girlfriend yesterday...i think he is having fun right now and experimenting...and i'm sure he still has great jams in the making like "Good news"..."Be with you" is an example of whats still in the chocolate factory...and yes the answer is he's gone full circle...the question is... will he come up with a new circle?...Trapped in the closet is a good example!...

Few good points mistamaxx.....i kno you love to bang the drum about the CF/LL/USM/HP era. Maybe we just gotta accept thats his off the wall/thriller era and it can't be touched again. Maybe we don't want that touched again because of how unique it was at the time, maybe we need something unique at this time. Ya we kno number 1 sex isnt masterpiece material. The question at hand is, can he come around full circle again and put out one more masterpiece? He has really talked up Zodiac. Will the filling be the best pie we've ate from him? I know i wrote we won't see another CF and we wont. What we may see is something as amazing......

IMO TITC is one of the most underrated works. Sure it got a little wacky by the end but the fact of the matter is it was pretty revolutionary. Yeah MTV tried that hip-hopera thing with beyonce and it went wood. Shows his amazing writing skills. On most writers best days they couldn't have wrote that!

    Not full-circle, in my opinion.

He still has more to offer. I've said this before, my personal take on this issue is that Rob is going through a little bit of a creative confusion sort of phase right now. I loved DU (yes, I did) and Untitled is still getting play on my iTouch on the regular. But he oughta go back to the early 90's style while at the same time giving it a modern touch.

HAVING SAID THAT--We are LUCKY AS HELL to be Kells fans. This man is a genius who leaks more tracks on a constant basis than any other major artist I can think of. I am truly thankful for all the joy he brings to my days with his beautiful voice (no homo) and smooth lyrics and production style.

cf/ll/hp/usm was more like his destiny/triumph era. 12 play/self title were his off the wall/thriller if you will imo.

not touched again and as i said before his peers then made him as driven as he was on his on. nowadays his peers are whom usher?? joe and a few others but he isn't nearly as driven and he peeps out what is happening make no mistake about it.

I get why perch brought up the words "come full circle", but I would not say that to talk about the changes his music has gone through. There's nothing new under the sun, as they say. He's always been the kind of artist who keeps his eyes on the in things during a certain period of time, which we can check out in the songs both for himself and others. The thing is, what's hot out there these days sound too easy and cheesy for him to incorporate into his own sound, but he's done it anyway and in an explicit fashion. Yeah, just like many other new-comers, he started out in the business borrowing from the likes of MJ, Teddy Riley, Charlie Wilson, etc., but all of them are great artists, not these T-Pain's or Akon's. Which is related to the point mistermaxxx made about him having no peers in the game.
