lena mclin taught him pitch, control and other things. he has natural talent and range but she showed him how to use his voice in different ways. she also was Chaka Khan's vocal teacher when Chaka was in high school in chicago.

Lena Mclin showed R about Opera and technical phrasing and things. clarity and tone.

Do you know if he's had any vocal coach ever since his professional career began? I'm also wondering, if not, if he's thought about it at some point.

And in the first place, what do you think about the idea of him having a vocal coach? I say "It couldn't hurt. Might be good".
His mother was his original vocal coach... He talks about how she sings as well as Gladys Knight etc... Then his music teacher from Kenwood HS Lena Mclin.

Why would ask this question?? Do you have a problem with R Kelly's vocals??? Robert's vocals are damn near perfection. Based on the number of hit songs Robert has produced its clear (to me at least) that he has had some formal training.

I realize I need to check myself sometimes when I talk to people about R Kelly, since I have been a fan since he started I forget there are people who only caught on to R Kelly's magic much later, and do not know the information about him that I take for granted.

No I got no problem with his vocal. But I know many professional artists have their vocal coach and haven't heard about R.Kelly's yet. I was thinking I'd never had any chance to hear and read about that since I'm not a longtime fan. I knew Ms.McLin's role.

I don't know. Lina Mclin was long ago. She's not doing vocal coaching now. I wouldn't care if he used a vocal coach. No artist is perfect.
Seems like no one has heard if he's had one and who it is. I appreciate everyone's comment, tho. Yeah, even professional artists should keep practicing by themselves and under outside guidance to avoid too much self-contentment.

Co-sign, helena (as usual) Hidden Content . Guidance is always a good thing, no matter how professional you get. It helps you to improve your work and prevents you from getting big-headed, thinking nobody can teach you anything. Rob's vocals are amazing but perfection doesn't exist and a coach never hurts.

he has. ALL artists have vocal coaches... Even the artists that you would think were too good to be taught anything - Mariah Carey

I think he thanked his vocal coach in the Happy People/ U Saved Me album
