Dirty Diddy trumped by R Kelly

WHEN does an artist go from veteran to, dare I say it, has-been?

Indeed, there is a thin line between the two, as this week's picks prove. But while it may be tough to hold on to the heyday that saw an artist at the peak of his popularity, change - as is often said - can be a good thing. Take old-school R&B singer R. Kelly, for example.

Though he first appeared on the scene in 1992 with group Public Announcement, it was his solo career - starting with 1993's debut album 12 Play, which spawned sexy single Bump N' Grind - that sent Kelly, 44, to the top of the charts.

Since then, the lothario has had his ups and downs. Who could forget the legal troubles involving a 14-year-old girl that plagued him?

Perhaps it didn't help that his music has always been on the salacious side, with outrageous, not to mention libidinous, lyrics (one need only listen to In The Kitchen, from his 2005 album TP.3 Reloaded, to hear what I mean).

But now, his 10th studio album, Love Letter, doesn't require a warning label as our Mr Kelly has toned things down quite drastically.

Without cheesy innuendos, it's easy to appreciate the silky-smooth Motown-inspired tracks that litter this record, which sold over 150,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release alone.

Standout numbers include When A Woman Loves, a big soul-infused song that sounds deliciously vintage. Love Is, a throwback duet with up-and-coming singer K.

    Michelle, is equally retro.

Okay, so Kelly didn't completely change his stripes - Taxi Cab is about making love in a, well, taxi cab. Still, overall, the album is a gem.

As for hip-hop maestro Diddy, or Puff Daddy, or whatever he goes by these days - his real name is Sean Combs, by the way - reinvention has not worked quite as well.

In recent years, Combs has appeared in movies, such as Get Him To The Greek, and concentrated on his huge business empire. But his last album was released in 2006. Now, the Grammy- winning artist, 41, has launched a musical collective.

Diddy-Dirty Money comprises Combs himself, plus two R&B babes, Dawn Richard and Kalenna Harper.

The group's first effort, Last Train To Paris, is a concept album - it follows the story of Diddy's alter-ego travelling from London to Paris to find a lost love.

Wrapped in electro-synth beats, the songs lack passion, even if they boast big names.

Indeed, Combs has enlisted the help of 16 big-name guests, including Justin Timberlake (who features with Lil Wayne on the terribly soulless Shades) and Usher (on the generic R&B number Looking For Love).

Overall, Combs comes across as trying too hard to stay relevant (Last Train reminds one of Kanye West's 2008 record 808s And Heartbreak) - a sign perhaps, that it might be time to throw in the towel.

Or, at least to go back to designing clothes.

Looks like Kelly wins this round.

Love that. I'm glad someone sees how musically irrelevant Diddy is.

though kellz and diddy worked together in the past and the self title album and the double r has work with diddy,etc.. that association ain't happen in a long, long time.

puff ain't counted on the real since " i need a girl" dropped and that has been nearly a decade.

he certainly been more involved with side acts than his own thing.

i guess the comparrison makes sense from this aingle and only from this point:

whereas puffy couldn't stop and i do feel alot of similaritys between the two, kayne imo jacked alot of puffy's style and swag.

kanye is doing puffy better than puffy is now

whereas trey songz gotta go back to drawing board because kellz told the kid, you good but this is how it is suppose to be done.

and lets not forget R got real talent, puffy been faking game for years.puff got hustle, but his own music thing might be over, but he ain't

Saw this article a few days ago on my mobile but forgot about it...thanks for posting!

Yea, Diddy got hustle but he might be kidding himself with music. He's always been a half-baked producer, stale rapper and day-old egg salad performer.

But you can't knock his hustle game and business sense. I think he needs to stick to the MTV game, Sean John and working on bringing and marketing other artists.

The R.Kelly and Diddy music comparison is kind of silly, but, I can see where they pick up the "generation" link. But aside from age and era there isn't much else they can compare.

    ^Good points AZ & Maxxxx.

Diddy will continue to make moves and more money; but musically there is no basis for comparison..
