Thread: Rob as Producer

Just wanna add something: DU was/is one of the best albums made, don't know why people don't like it. It was quality work. Which other R&B singer can do a Hip-Hop album and make it a success??
Untitled is good in it's own way, both albums can't be compared and it has nothing to do with co-writers/producers.

To maxxs point I agree but at the same time I think he can do the sam Cooke records on his own, I think he has been relying on other producers mores for the hip hop/ current stuff

I disagree.

Other artists need co-producers. R. Kelly on the other hand can be locked in a studio by himself and create a whole album. I don't think other producers can capture his feel and artistry as he can solo. That was my problem with Untitled. Though it's a great album. It lacks that feel Rob's other classics have. It kind sounds too try hard.

I see no problem with Rob working with producers who understand soul. For instance, imagine Maxwell or D'angelo or QuestLove doing production for him or even better Mr Quincy Jones doing an entire project with him. Even Stevie ran out of steam at some point producing himself, great singer producers need to work with others to help recharge their batteries. The trick is finding the producer who complements their stlye the best.

i still maintain that Rob is better on his own, but you make an excellent point when you say that it's about finding a producer who complements his style the best.

example: i think i remember Rob saying in an interview maybe last year(?) about Untitled that he was in the studio working with Polow but decided not to use any of Polow's beats because Rob felt they didn't fit on the type of album he was trying to make.

just thought of one well-known producer that Rob fits well with when the song calls for this kind of production: polow.

did a great job with fireworks. and ringtone's (DU itunes bonus track) beat goes hard, especially in the car.

Why do people keep saying that "Polow" produced "Fireworks" but when i look in the booklet i don't see his name listed??

i just thought that was the case since (1) every hip-hop/R&B download site mentioned polow as the producer and (2) it sounds like a polow production.

I flipped the booklet like 3 times in and out, but no "Polow" mentioned by "Fireworks" it says:
