Thread: Is the "Same Girl" R&B Music?

The best thing Jim Derogatis has EVER done for me is make me think about R.Kelly's and Usher's song "Same Girl" in a different way.

I never thought about the "Same Girl" possibly being R&B Music...take a look below. What do you think? Is the "Same Girl" R&B Music?

[This could be R.Kelly introducing Usher to what he thinks is JUST HIS girl: R&B Music]

[R&B Music really is R.Kelly's life and would rival any woman to be his wife]

Usher: Man I cant believe that we been messing with the…

Kellz: Thought she was someone I could trust but she been doubling up with us.
[This line would suggest that there are TWO people running R&B Music right now. Not only ONE.]

Usher: See I met her at this party in Atlantaaaaaa!

[Where they both started and have taken R&B in their careers.]

Usher: She came right up to me giving me conversation.
I said girl do you got a man she said no with no hesitation.
[Could this be the "passing of the torch"? Where R&B started talking to Usher at the turn of this century?]

Kellz: Well it must be a music thing because she said the same to me?!
Had her body all in my face while Im laughing and buying her drinks.
Usher: She whisper in my face and tell me can you take me home?? [Me too!!]
Kellz: Man she was in the Chi singing that same song!
Usher: Is that true?!
[This is where Usher and R.Kelly talk about having traded hits since 2000. You think Usher is taking R&B and then R.Kelly takes it back.]

[R.Kelly referencing that R&B went to Usher's album "Confessions" recently.]
Usher: Man I knew her “Body Was Calling” when she said: I Want You!
[Usher saying that R.Kelly used to have R&B with hits like "Your Body is Calling".]


Usher: Don’t like the way she been going about it [going about it]!!
Kellz what you think that we should do about it [do about it]??
Kellz: Call her up at her home, she wont know that im on the phone.
Usher: Yeah man that’s the way!
Kellz: We about to bust this chick!
Man just tell her to meet up with you and im gonna show up too!
Usher: And she wont know what to do!!!
Kellz: And we’ll be standing there singing:
[In this verse they are saying that both R.Kelly and Usher are going to confront R&B together? Instead of separate or against each other???? The last line says: "And we'll be standing there singing" .... BOTH of them standing there TOGETHER. Is this R.Kelly showing respect to Usher and vise versa instead of having a beef?]

I think it is written in an ambigious way on purpose by Kells, he must be enjoying it

Hmmm...it makes sense. I didn't vote in the poll because I don't know. I'd say maybe. I think its possible that you could be reading too much into it and they were just making a record that some dudes can identity with. But on the other hand...with Kellz I never rule anything out. Anything is possible when it comes to him. But I really don't think Usher is at Kellz' level AT ALL. Therefore there would be no reason to share R&B or "pass the torch".

The question I am posing is: Is the "Same Girl" a metaphor for R&B music. Is R&B the girl they are "sharing".

I know and even Usher fans know that he isnt even close to R.Kelly. But he is the closest candidate. If Kellz were to pass the torch to anyone it would probably be Usher. And the song isnt really a "pass the torch" type song. Because at the end the lyrics read "WE'LL be standing there"...as in TOGETHER.

Its interesting to think about it...

Well, in my opinon that's way too much interpretation of a regular Rnb duet. I mean come on...that's a bit too exaggerated.

reminds me of my exams in German, where I had to interpret the craziest shit in those "Goethe" and "Schiller" books...just because teachers and so called "specialists in German studies" wanna hear that.

Exactly... There is no passing the torch in R&B...

Remember back in the day when every R&B artist had a hit record the radio would blast them back to back...

From Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Rufus, Pattie "Labelle", Michael Jackson. You had to have a great voice and a strong melody.

Now a days R Kelly is a man on an island all by himself carrying R&B on his back. In the 70's he would have many around him to keep up the genre.

Kids buy hip hop so that's all they make anymore including R Kelly Hairbraider could be a rap song.

I guess I was a little confused.

Usher has been an R&B artist since he started in the game from what I remember. He never sang any other kind of music, so why would R Kelly pass something to him he's already got???

AZ I think you need to do a little more research on R&B music before you post a R&B question... Because you are in a room with several R&B connoisseurs. I grew up with the same music R Kelly gets his inspiration from. I've seen the Gap Band, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Rick James, New Edition, Jodeci, MC Hammer, Guy, Boys II Men etc. all these artists were before R Kelly R&B didn't start with Kells.

I'm not always trying to challenge you.

this song is along the lines of the Girl is mine with Michael Jackson and Paul Mccartney. a powerful duet between two big names in music and more of a Power lunch than anything. I mean the colabs are to generate hype and to see if there is any chemistry and maybe Milk it for what it is worth.

the thread asks is the song a Metaphor for R&B Music and it might be but the reality is that the video had buzz but the song never caught on like they wanted and it came across so contrived IMO. the vibe wasn't there but they are two of the most important Cats in R&B Music over the past 20 years.


bottom line folks in here we are gonna always Call Kellz da King of R&B and folks who roll with Usher will say likewise for him so it all depends on which side you roll with. but to me personally it ain't even close because Kellz represents the full zenith of R&B and he does it strongly.Usher has R&B in him and Pop but he is still trying to get credibility with the Hip-Hop crowd.
