How does he compare to his own idols?
May 27, 2007
R. Kelly recently made headlines and generated endless discussions on the blogosphere when he made an outlandish boast during an interview for the spring/summer issue of Hip-Hop Soul magazine.
"I'm the [Muhammad] Ali of today," Kelly said. "I'm the Marvin Gaye of today. I'm the Bob Marley of today. I'm the Martin Luther King, or all the other greats that have come before us. And a lot of people are starting to realize that now."
Even those who grant that Kelly is the dominant creative force in R&B today question the egotism inherent in this boast. But in the interest of exploring the comparison he made, here is a look at some of the most famous quotations by the heroes Kelly referenced along with more lyrical excerpts from his new album "Double Up."
'I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.'
-- The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
'You got me locked up in your cage of ecstasy and that's the way I like it' You're my safari fantasy.' -- R. Kelly, 'The Zoo'
'The stone that the builder refused to lay should always be the head cornerstone. You're a builder, baby; here I am a stone.'
-- Bob Marley
'I can't believe I'm gonna be a father / In nine months a child will be born / Baby, you're pregnant in April / Which means we're havin' a Capricorn.'
-- R. Kelly, 'Havin' a Baby'
'I wish people would love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world.'
-- Muhammad Ali
'This is for them thick girls, small girls, tall girls / And this is for them skinny girls, white girls, black girls / Don't matter what color or nationality / I got a sweet tooth, come and get wit' me.'
-- R. Kelly, 'Sweet Tooth'
'Music, not sex, got me aroused.'
-- Marvin Gaye
'Tell me are you ready girl to take a trip out of this world / I guarantee you'll like it / It'll take your breath away / Gonna get you so excited once I taste your Milky Way.' -- R. Kelly, 'Sex Planet'
