Thread: Uganda Entertainment News: R Kelly to perform in Kampala on Jan 29 2010

American R and B music star R Kelly is coming to Uganda on December 11th, 2009 to stage a biggest concert in Kampala the next day.

The soul songwriter will entertain Ugandans on January 29 2010 at Lugogo Cricket Oval.

Sources have told Ultimate Media’s entertainment desk that Zain Uganda has spent 300,000 US dollars (about 650 million shillings) to have Kelly perform in Kampala.

Kelly 42, joined music in 1992 with the group Public Announcement before going solo in 1993.

Kelly is a voice behind world’s great hits: I Believe I can Fly, Ignition, The World’s Greatest, I Could Turn Back The Hands of Time and Gotham City among other hit singles.

Kelly will be joined by Uganda’s leading artists like Mozey Radio, Weasel TV, Pastor Wilson Bugembe and Iryn Namubiru of Bonna Obasinga fame among others.

Yesterday the McKenna Girl (from Billboard) said this is gonna be your first World Tour since 2001...I thought it was just a mistake...

Yeah, I caught that last night when the woman mentioned the beginning of his world tour plus I think when Rob responded to Imperator, he mentioned coming there in January I believe so watch out world!

This is the beginning of the next phase of his career building on the fanbase to ensure continuous longevity. I see R. Kelly as one of those artists people will be willing to read, listen or buy anything of his 20 years down the road. Kind of like Elton John or Rolling Stones. R&B artists for the first time have fanbases that can buy purchase merchandise at great levels. Old rock stars have Boomers that have the income support them at concerts, DVDs, clothes, video games, etc...

In the next 10 years artists that are moving into that legendary category (i.e. R. Kelly, MJB, Usher) have the chance to get these opportunities. The DVDs are just the beginning.
