    Default r. kelly as a beat maker/producer

Do people here think r. kelly gets the credit he deserves as a producer/beat maker...
I mean everybody talks so much about his lyrics, and voice ( which they should) that they tend to forget his production skillz, to me r. kelly is just as briliant beat maker as a songwriter, he is probebly one of view people who makes a R&B/hiphop track and then turns and do a opera, or watever else he is doing what do yall think?

I think he gets props as a producer and singersongwriter, but not much acclaim as a beatmaker. He's not in the category where Timbaland, The Neptunes, Dr.Dre, Just Blaze, who else,,,,Primo, and many others are. They mainly make beats and don't write like The R. So, it's hard to say Kellz is underrated as a beatmaker. IMO, it's just that they focus on his songwriting and producing more. I love his beats in many songs. Esp. when you feel good and those beats come on, you find yourself bobbing your head even before you know.

I think hip hop terminology has been overused in general.

'beat making' and R&B producing are two completely different arts. Production in R&B requires the understanding of chords, melodies, key changes etc. Therefore as a PRODUCER, R. Kelly is a genius. His key changes, melodies, riffs, slow melodies, uplifting key changes rank amongst Quincy and Stevie.

Beat making on the other hand is pure hip hop terminology, and should be differentiated from R&B production. Kellz might have hip hop songs but he's not like Dre, Timbaland etc who are 'beatmakers', samplers.. loop drum rhythms etc.

Also I think calling R's instrumentals 'beats' is cheapening it in a sense because his real skill is chord progression and melodies.

    I quote the last post..
I mean. . these are to different things, but it's more difficult to do a beat as Kellz than like Timbo , Just Blaze (even I love 'em also)
you can do a beat in a minute
but you need more time to do an r&b production..not considering the time u need for study music, chords , keys and the style versatility

i think of R.Kelly as a Songwriter/Producer. Rolling Stone Magazine called Kellz the Most Important R&B Producer in the Hip-Hop Era. He has Beats, but that to me is limited. big difference because Beat-Makers to me&My ears aren't Producers. a Producer knows about tempo, groove, harmony, timing&balance. Beat-Makers are trendy&just ride off a wave for the moment, but a Producer can make his thing at any time no matter. now when Kellz does the Colabs with Rappers it's all about the beats because it's all about the money, but when Kellz is working with other Singers then you feel the Production. Sanx nailed it as well. Kellz can play the Beat game but guess what? we wouldn't be caring almost 20 years later because Beat-Makers are only as good as there beats&Groove often with a selected Artist to do there track, but they are what I call Hot-Shot Makers. you can't bank on that in the big picture. good topic. the difference between Kellz and the Hip-Hop Producers also is that he doesn't have to follow a current trend. Kellz has a strong understanding of melody, Groove&feel to always do his thing.

everybody who posted in this thread is on point, in hiphop as well as r&b, being a PRODUCER is about more than just makin a beat and shipping it off to an artist. It's being there durin the recording process, coaching the artist, shaping the song.
R Kelly is a true producer, cant nobody mess w/ him in r&b, he creates songs.

He is all of that we can't limit him because he doesn't limit himself. the man has vaults with music we haven't even heard and its probably so much that we will not ever get to hear it in this life time.

as R. says "u ain't never heard a slow jam like this,u ain't never heard a remix like this"
.. and he's the only one that could re-create his productions into the Opera ..

everybody could notice some pieces and fragments of "chocolate factory" in the first productions he made after that album..
u can feel the "TP3" style in "don't let go",in "Promise RMX" and more..

it's all about a flavour that still remain in your mouth after a good album and u can taste it in everything he produces after..

(excuse me for my english )
