and I was happy to see Deitrick Haddon show respect for Kells and his music ability. So many time artist these days fail to recognize the artist that influienced them musically because of music biz politics or bla bla bla. I have always been a fan of Deitrick because he DOES NOT stay in a musical box (like kells). He allow his music to speak louder than the haters that want him to play the script. This is the part of the interview where he mentions R-Kelly:
Singersroom: Are there any secular or R&B artists that influence your music?
Deitrick Haddon: Oh absolutely. I don’t care who you are – saint or sinner – you got to give respect to artists like Michael Jackson for his electrifying stage presence and Stevie Wonder for his writing ability and being a prolific songwriter. I’m also a big fan of the old soul artists like Al Green, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway, and Jackie Wilson. I enjoy real vocalist – those that can flat out organically sing! Not just old artists too but people like R. Kelly, I really respect because he’s done so much since he’s been in the game. Anybody that’s great in what they do, I respect it. I can go on for days simply because I love music.
