Thread: Definition of old school kellz

ok...I don't knw about y'all but I get VERY tired of ppl they want old school kellz back....Me personally, I believe ppl r confused....On one hand, ppl r quick to say all kellz do is sing about sex but when he releases an album like "Love Letter", ppl say what happen to old school kellz??

The reason why I'm making this thread is because I was on youtube looking up the words rmx clip and I saw 2 ppl have a debate over kellz..One person was saying the song sounded like old school kellz and he needs to stick to that while the other person was saying that he's evolved into a different person and not everything is about sex....


what's your definition of "old school kellz"???

I think old school kellz is alive with love letter... Listen to body's callin and lost in your love back to back, not much difference in style or subject matter

OMG! thanks for this thread. most ppl just dont no any betta but I get tired of correcting ppl. there is no such thing as the old school R. Kelly. you can only evolve with the music as an artist & thats what he's done even if we disagree w/his choice of tracks & collaborations. plus his content is still the same just that he sexual songs are what stood out to ppl. thats society for you. he's always had love songs, party songs, inspirational songs as well as sex induced tracks.

well Old school Kellz is the synth and Programmed beats with a borderline smooth Jazz meets Hip-Hop he had a real distinctive sound back then and it was raw as his Lyrics were.

fast forward to now and he has a fuller arrangements and Grooves, Production is stronger and more expansive.

vocally he is as Soulful as Ever,however his topics and Life has evolved.

he ain't never lost his Swag, however when he does those tired club tracks or trys to talk and sing on some tracks with some tired hack act then it weighs his groove down.

truth also is that he wrote some Great songs so early on in his career and folks got spolied, however he still has composed top tier material as evident by Love Letter.

yeah from 05-09 IMO He was Hit and Miss,however he rebounded strongly with Love Letter.


he is gonna divide folks musically and that is part of His Genius because he represents different things to different people musically.


think about it, you got folks who want the R&B Rawness

you got others who love the Gospel stuff he does

you got others who love his Pop and acessible material the anthems

you got the Folks who want the Steppers stuff only

you got the folks who want the remixes and the whatever he wants to say version of him

you got folks who want the trapped in the closet Material

you got Folks who only dig the stuff he does for others


pick your bag and you ain't gonna please all the folks all the time.

he sold alot of records and had some larger than life songs and he worked with Larger than Life acts back then which makes that era of the 90's truly romanticized.

however his 00's Era is every bit as Great if you ask me because tp2, Chocolate Factory,Happy People and the Unreleased LoveLand are strong enough to Hang with 12 Play, self title album and the R Double Album IMO

if he still sounded like he did back in 91 then he would be on a citlin circuit tour now as to expanding into different areas.

while I still dig grooving to "She's got that Vibe" there is reason why he doesn't perform that song live, because he is a whole different energy and place in 2011.

LOL we already had 4 12 Play albums

Apparently ppl don't get enough of it lol!!! as i wrote in my previous post, the two ppl debating were saying they want the old r.kelly back...and one of them said well he is doing his own thing and he did LL album because the younger guys r kinda biting him and the other person said he needs to listen to the first 5 of his albums and come out with something great! I could understand people saying things like this around the time of the Double Up-era, but since then we've had songs that could fit onto any of his past albums, and a lot of people said around that time that they wanted him to act his age and be more mature.. he releases Love Letter, yet some people still say the same. Can't satisfy everyone, but most are doing it because they just want something to complain about.
